Ever since I was a little girl, I’ve loved makeup, nail polish, long hair, and smooth skin. I can remember visiting the cosmetic and perfume counter of our local drug store downtown with my grandmother. I have always loved being female, the products, tools and tips that help make us feel pretty and strong to face even our most difficult days. Fast forward about 25 years and you can only imagine my surprise when I learned my cosmetic drawer was more like a toxic waste dump and with my daughter (then 8) mimicking everything she saw me do- I knew it was time for a change.
In 2008, I began to realize how many assumptions I had been making. Through this process I learned that the FDA doesn’t do much as far as keeping undesirable chemicals in cosmetic products, off store shelves. Now I don’t want to be dramatic, it’s not the kind of stuff that will melt your skin off but prolonged, daily use can cause irritations, aggravate acne, trigger allergic reactions and disrupt the delicate balance of our endocrine system.
For too long I had been deceived by slick advertising campaigns and clever packaging into believing what I was buying to put on my family’s skin was natural, beneficial even. As a young wife and mom, I realized keeping my family safe was my responsibility and most likely just like many of you, I began cleaning up our life, our diet, our home, and our bodies.
Originally, I wanted to buy products that I could feel good about my family using every single day. The more I learned, the more frustrated I became with the deceptive marketing and labeling practices of the cosmetic industry in general. I searched for a company that I wanted to support because I thought they were putting our health first. I also wanted “natural”, not the deceptive kind of natural, that companies like Proctor & Gamble tout their products to be. But a look you in the eye, real person kinda natural. No chemical preservatives, undesirable ingredients, fillers, or junk I couldn’t pronounce.
It’s then that I decided that maybe it was my responsibility to share what I know. In 2010 Cosmic got its humble beginnings in the kitchen of our little 1930’s home. Our very first customers were our family and friends. From the start, every decision we’ve made has been rooted in using only natural, healthy ingredients and to hold all our products to the same standard as that first bar of soap. Simple, natural, effective.
Hi there! I’m Michelle, founder and maker behind Cosmic Bath & Beauty.
I have spent the last decade learning how what we put in and on our bodies affects our short and long term health. Since 2010 I have been making small batches of non-toxic beauty and body care products, so that your self care, doesn’t in fact do the opposite.
Cosmic is a different kind of cosmetic company, where good health is a priority, beauty is natural, and makeup is a fun accessory. Your investment in our products is also an investment in the health of you and your family. I’m proud to be making Cosmic products for anyone who knows they're worth making the change to healthier cosmetics and I’ll do my best to try to make the switch as painless as possible.
