Lauroyl Lysine is an ingredient you'll find in many of our Mineral Makeup formulations and our first Mineral Makeup Spotlight Ingredient. Because all the ingredients we choose to work with have a purpose, we're creating an index so that you, our conscious consumer, so that you can educate yourself when you're curious about the what's and why's behind everything we use.

Let's explore the benefits of Lauroyl Lysine for healthy skin and why and how it's best used topically. But first, what is Lauroyl Lysine exactly? Lauroyl Lysine, or L-Lysine as it's often referred to, is a derivative of lauric acid and lysine, a naturally occurring amino acid derived from coconut and palm oils.

It is an expensive raw material, and in a powdery base formulation, it works as a powder emollient to improve adherence to the skin and reduces the drying effects that some mineral powders can have. As a result, you should notice an increased "cushion" or bounce in the formulations containing it. In addition, you'll find it softer, silkier, and smoother on the skin.

So let's start from the beginning. Lauroyl Lysine has been used in cosmetics for several decades. It was first introduced as a replacement for talc. Although far more expensive, it quickly gained popularity in the cosmetics industry due to its skin conditioning properties and ability to improve the texture and appearance of the skin. Since then, Lauroyl Lysine has been widely used in various cosmetic products, including foundations, powders, blushes, eyeshadows, and skin and hair care. Obtained from a natural fatty acid and an essential amino acid, lysine. It really is a unique powdery ingredient that adds so many benefits in diverse applications. For example, in a powdery base formulation like our foundations and blushes, it works to improve adherence to the skin for all-day wear and reduces the drying effects that you can experience with other mineral powders.

Typically used as a skin conditioning agent, L-lysine can:

  1. Improves Skin Texture: Lauroyl Lysine helps to improve the appearance of skin texture by providing a smooth and silky feel. Just what you want in a light weight  natural foundation, blush or bronzer.
  2. Hydrates the Skin: Lauroyl Lysines' emollient properties mean it subtly draws moisture from the environment and helps prevent the skin from moisture loss, which helps to keep the skin plump and prevents and soothes dryness and flakiness, particularly during the colder months.
  3. Acts as an Antioxidant: Lauroyl Lysine is a powerful antioxidant that helps to protect the skin from damage caused by free radicals. Aiding to prevent premature aging and keep the skin looking youthful and radiant, but more importantly, healthier and more protected.
